Mercy Hospital Asthma Training Program seeks to: educate patients on their illness, build skills for patient to be capable of taking control of their asthma, and provide free tools to assess themselves. Main program objectives include the following metrics include: Reduce exacerbations, reduce missed school/ work days, Prevent asthma related emergency visits/readmissions and hospitalizations.

Asthma education include learning about your condition. Understanding how and when to use each of your medications (and when to seek emergency help), proper use and cleaning of your inhalers. You will learn to recognize and avoid triggers or things that make your symptoms worse which is essential in keeping your asthma under control. You will learn how to self-monitor your lung function using a peak flow meter, keeping track of your symptoms, and how to use an asthma action plan.

Patients are provided asthma control assessment and action planning, asthma self-management training, and free resources to control their asthma such as peak flow meters, medication spacers, asthma friendly pillows and covers. In addition, for individuals without health insurance or if health insurance does not cover their medications, we will help them obtain free asthma medications through our meds to bed program. We will also assist with free transportation to asthma education visits.

Some of the statements from our patients include “this program is a great resource to help me cope with my asthma” and “I never had an asthma educator before but after attending asthma education classes I understand my asthma better”. Our doctors are saying “most patients with asthma do not use their inhalers properly and this is a major problem I have with my patients. We often do not have enough time to explain the technique to the patients in a quick visit. Therefore, this program is a significant resource for the community and It’s FREE”.
