Controlling Asthma Project conducts comprehensive asthma care interventions and education programs at schools, for health systems and hospitals, childcare providers, and others.

Comprehensive asthma care interventions, including:

1. School-based Interventions
• Healthy Learners Asthma Initiative in Minneapolis Public Schools
• St. Paul Public Schools Asthma Initiative

2. Health Systems and Profession Education Interventions
• Clinic systems change project
• Asthma education in the emergency department
• Physician Asthma Care Education (PACE)
• Asthma Educator Certificate Course
• Implementation and Interpretation of Spirometry in the Primary Care Practice
• Pharmacist continuing education course
• PharmD rotation

4. Community-based Education and Interventions
• Environmental Improvement for Children with Asthma (home assessments and modifications)
• Childcare provider education
• Group parent asthma education
• Minnesota Asthma Information Center

Results to Date
• 55% reduction in hospitalizations
• 12% reduction in emergency department visits
• 27% reduction in parents who reported asthma symptoms limited their child’s activities
• 2 day high attendance for students with asthma in St. Paul Public Schools intervention schools than non-intervention schools
