Self Help, Inc. has been funded to identify and remediate environmental hazards in 300 housing units in the greater Brockton community where low income children ages 0 to 10 reside and are diagnosed or at risk for environmentally related illness.

Self Help, Inc. has been funded by the US Department of Housing and Urban Development for a 30 month period to identify and remediate environmental hazards in 300 housing units in the greater Brockton community where a low income child age 0 to 10 resides and is diagnosed or at risk for environmentally related illness.

The Healthy Homes Demonstration Program is designed to help families learn about the health risks they face at home and how to reduce them. Those hazards include; Asthma and Allergen triggers such as mold, rodent or pest droppings’ fire and safety hazards and lead paint hazards.

The program hopes to offer services to 650 families for participation and enroll 325 families into program.

Program Partners include; Brockton Neighborhood Health Center, Health Care of Southeastern Mass, City of Brockton’s America’s Promise Program, Self Help’s Energy Conservation programs, Self Help’s Lead Abatement program.

The Program will receive referrals from Brockton Neighborhood Health Center of at risk children, train Health Care of Southeastern Mass Home Visitors to conduct preliminary home assessments and provide Home Visitors with Child safety kits to distribute to families. Program staff will follow-up with intermediate hazard assessments and develop remediation plans which will include providing allergen-free bed covers, minor home repairs, non-toxic cleaning supplies, etc. where appropriate.

The program will refer high risk properties for professional assessments, develop remediation plan and contract abatement.

You are eligible if you have a child under the age of 10 who is at risk for asthma, and other environmental related diseases, or other safety hazards in the home, you may be eligible for our free family program.

If you are a homeowner or income property owner, and if your home requires professional and/or extensive remediation, you will be responsible for at least part of the cost. However you may be eligible for low to no interest loans or grants.

The Emigrant Trails Tool Kit is a self care card provided free of charge to all individuals who request it.

The Tool Kit is a "Your Asthma Book" and self care card. Our mission is to provide this free of charge to all individuals who request it. It is in it''s 3rd edidtion and is updated with each NIH guideline change. It is available on our website www.sacbreathe.org. We have distributed 28,000 tool kits in English, Spanish, Vietnamese & Chinese.
