Dr. Stukus is a Professor of Clinical Pediatrics in the Division of Allergy and Immunology. Prior to becoming the director of the Food Allergy Treatment Center, Dr. Stukus started the Complex Asthma Clinic at Nationwide Children’s Hospital in 2011, treating children with severe or difficult-to-treat asthma. In addition to providing clinical care for children with all types of food allergies, Dr. Stukus participates in clinical research, quality improvement, patient advocacy, and medical education. Dr. Stukus holds multiple leadership positions in the American Academy of Allergy, Asthma and Immunology (AAAAI) and the American College of Allergy, Asthma, and Immunology and is one of twelve allergists invited as a member of the Joint Task Force for Practice Parameters. In 2018, Dr. Stukus was invited to become the first Social Media Medical Editor for the AAAAI, where he produces and hosts their podcast “Conversations From the World of Allergy”. He has been named a Top Doctor in Pediatric Allergy every year since 2015. Dr. Dave (as his patients call him) has devoted his career to communicating evidence-based medicine and best clinical practice to colleagues, medical professionals of all backgrounds, patients, and the general public. He is very active on social media and uses his popular Twitter and Instagram accounts @AllergyKidsDoc to dispel myths and combat misinformation.

Dr. Joseph is a member and fellow of the American College of Allergy, Asthma and Immunology and the National Medical Association (NMA) in which she is active locally and nationally. She has collaborated with the NAACP speaking about COVID-19 during the height of the pandemic and has been featured on NMA talks as an expert panelist discussing asthma in the African American community. Dr. Joseph has been awarded Top Physician Under 40 by the NMA. Dr. Joseph hosts the “How Do You Medicine” podcast highlighting healthcare professionals doing medicine their way.

SMART therapy is for patients with moderate to severe asthma who need a combination treatment. This combined treatment consists of an inhaled corticosteroid and an inhaled long-acting beta-2 agonist (LABA). Under asthma guidelines, SMART therapy is recommended for people with moderate to severe asthma, including children ages 5 and older. It is considered an easier and patient friendly treatment plan to follow. In this webinar, learn about SMART therapy and other patient friendly asthma management strategies.

Dr. Hogan is double board certified in allergy and immunology and pediatrics. She practices at the Children’s Hospital of the King’s Daughter in Virginia. Dr. Hogan is passionate about community education in asthma and food allergies. She feels it is very important to not only get the correct diagnosis for food allergies but also important to understand the impact such a diagnosis has on the child and the family. She formed a regional food allergy support group called FASGOT.com, which helps healthcare providers, schools and families deal with food allergies. She is extensively involved in the education of the school nurses in the seven districts in her area and has organized outreach programs for community physicians. For Dr. Hogan, CHKD really is more than a hospital. It allows her to teach not only families but also future doctors in pediatrics and allergy. It supports her as she tries to work in the community, and it allows her to do clinical research. Dr. Hogan chairs the asthma committee of the American College of Allergy, Asthma, and Immunology.

The Asthma Educator Institute™ (AEI) is a three partial-day preparatory course for individuals that want to implement asthma guidelines-based care and those qualified to take the National Board for Respiratory Care (NBRC) certified asthma educator (AE-C) examination. The AEI was developed with experts in the field of asthma and reflects the Expert Panel Report 3: Guidelines for the Diagnosis and Management of Asthma.

AEI is a professional education course that targets frontline healthcare professionals, such as: nurses, nurse practitioners, respiratory therapists, physicians, physician assistants, pharmacists, other licensed or credentialed healthcare professionals, community health workers and educators with 1000+ direct hours of asthma education eligible to sit for the national asthma certification (AE-C) exam. This course is also a great refresher for current certified asthma educator's preparing for recertification, and also includes approved CEU/CME credit to recertify without retaking the exam.

The curriculum aligns with the National Board for Respiratory Care (NBRC) Candidate Handbook and includes case reviews, hands-on skills demonstrations and practice.

Note: This program is designed as a prep course for the NBRC AE-C exam, but there is no requirement that participants sign up for the exam after completing the course. Any professional interested in gaining better skills and understanding of asthma self-management and implementing asthma guidelines-based care would benefit from this training.
